Empire of Silver - New China Movie about Silver and Paper Money

THERE'S scope for an intriguing film about China at the end of the 19th century from the perspective of one of the nation's leading banks.

But in the hands of first-time Taiwanese-American director Christina Yao, this sluggish, uninvolving soap opera hardly resonates with the present as it ought to.

With the Chinese economy in tumult, the pragmatic banker Master Kang (Zhang Tielin) is bent on preserving his family's financial empire.

There is no love lost between him and his heir apparent, Third Master (Aaron Kwok), given Third Master's passion for the woman (Hao Lei) who becomes Kang's second wife.

There's a great deal more to the story: the fate of Third Master's three brothers, the change to ''paper money'' in place of silver, and a random attack by digitally generated wolves. Other subplots are introduced, then dropped: it's hard to account for the fleeting presence of Jennifer Tilly as a missionary, unless this is supposed to make the film more marketable in the US. Ultimately, the clash between father and son is resolved in an unsatisfying, evasive manner that virtually erases much of what has gone before.

The film depends heavily throughout on voiceover narration by a later member of the dynasty, who seems mysteriously well-informed about events that occurred before he was born. As a result, there is rarely much suspense or narrative momentum.

Nor does Yao overcome a blandly decorative style, in which the camera rises and falls with stately regularity and most interiors are bathed in golden light.

Ounces of Silver: 2012 Fiji Apocalipse Silver Coin $10 Legal Tender

Apocalypse 2012 - SOLD OUT!

The Maya Calendar is the best known of all prophecies. It describes exactly the days of our present fourth period, from 11 August 3114 BC to 21 December 2012′s. The 21st December 2012 after the Mayan Long Count Calendar is the end of human civilization.

On December 21, 2012 happens the so-called “galactic alignment”, where the sun, the moon and all the other planets in our solar system are located perfectly on a line with respect to the center of our galaxy. This  event is held only every 26,000 years and is very unique.

What physical and energetic effects it will have on the earth, is still enigmatic. Many consider 2012 as the beginning of a “New Consciousness”, the beginning of a new, more conscious of this age to the present transition period of dramatic transformations.

Palau 2011 $2 World of Insects - Dragonfly Silver 925 Proof Just 1000 minted

The Beautiful second coin issued by the Republic of Palau in 2010 belonging to series: World of Insect. It depicts the amazing Dragonfly species the Blue-eyed Hawker.

DRAGONFLY AESHNA AFFINIS

The Southern Migrant Hawker or Blue-eyed Hawker (Aeshna affinis) is a dragonfly found in southern Europe and Asia. As its name suggests the male has blue eyes and also blue marking on the abdomen.

It is characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body.

Dragonflies are similar to damselflies, but the adults can be differentiated by the fact that the wings of most dragonflies are held away from, and perpendicular to, the body when at rest. Dragonflies possess six legs (like any other insect), but most of them cannot walk well. Dragonflies are valuable predators that eat mosquitoes, and other small insects like flies, bees, ants, and butterflies. They are usually found around lakes, ponds, streams and wetlands because their larvae, known as "nymphs", are aquatic.

Aeshna affinis is found in southern and central Europe and all around the Mediterranean, in North Africa and the Middle East and across Asia to China. It is found on many Mediterranean islands including Menorca, Corsica, and Sicily. It is a migrant species and so is found further northwards in good years.

One Million Mintage For 2013 Kookaburra Silver Bullion Coin

The 2013 1oz Australian Kookaburra will be the first to have a mintage cap of 1 million coins.

The decision follows the expansion of the traditional 300,000 mintage to 500,000 for 2012. Despite the added availability, this year’s 1oz silver bullion coin sold out remarkably quickly and so we’ve taken the bold set of doubling the mintage.

There’s a feeling around the Mint that the 2013 artistry works particularly well. In fact it’s has been adjudged internally as one of the stand-outs from the entire program!

For me it recalls the classic two-bird designs of 1994 and 2001 but in the attractive style of Natasha Muhl who created the image for our acclaimed Australian Platypus platinum bullion coin.

Hopefully the market will agree and we’ll be interested in feedback via this blog when the time comes.
The 2013 Kookaburra design is due to be unveiled in mid-August, with availability via the website, bullion desk and international dealer network soon afterwards.

Stay tuned for the first glimpse of what promises to be a spectacular addition to the Australian Precious Metals Coin Program, which will also be celebrating the Year of the Snake in 2013.

2012 Young Collectors Animal Athletes – Monarch Butterfly $1 Coin - Perth Mint Australia

Brilliant orange and black in colour, the Monarch is among the most easily recognisable of the butterfly species.  It is estimated that the Monarch Butterfly can fly over 425 kilometres a day, which is a long way for a creature that is only a few centmetres long!  This amazing feat can be compared to the length of the human Olympic marathon, which covers an official distance of just over 42 kilometres.

The Monarch is famous for its southward migration and northward return in summer from Canada to Mexico and Baja California, which spans the life of three to four generations of the butterfly. The Monarch can also be found in parts of Europe, New Zealand and Australia.
The Monarch migration is one of the greatest natural phenomena in the insect world.  No wonder this colourful creature is the marathon champion of the insect world!
